About Suburban Surgical Associates
SSA is still a growing multispecialty surgical practice that offers a range of services. In addition to a wide range of specialties, SSA owns a fully (ICAVL) accredited vascular lab called The St. Louis Center for Circulatory Disorders. SSA is one of the largest independent multispecialty surgical practices in the St. Louis area.
Our Practice History
Jeffrey E. Zuke, M.D., F.A.C.S., – General Surgeon and John D. Hirsch, M.D., F.A.C.S. – General Surgeon founded an independent surgical practice in July 1985 with the intention of providing surgical excellence. They were highly trained, innovative surgeons who were well received by their peers. With the desire for continuous growth in multiple areas, they envisioned adding partners from various surgical specialties over time. In 1990, when Larry Mendelow, M.D., F.A.C.S. (July 1, 1990 – Colon & Rectal Surgeon) joined the group, Suburban Surgical Associates (SSA), Inc. was established in the West County area.

General Surgery
Jeffrey E. Zuke, M.D., F.A.C.S and Omar M. Guerra M.D., F.A.C.S are board certified general surgeons specializing in surgical diseases of the gallbladder, abdominal wall hernias, inguinal hernias and gastrointestinal emergencies. They perform both laparoscopic and open abdominal procedures.
Vascular Surgery
Brent T. Allen, M.D., F.A.C.S. and Jack R. Oak, M.D., F.A.C.S. specializes in all facets of vascular surgery-carotid endarterectomies, aortic aneurysms, lower extremity peripheral vascular disease and varicose veins. Their vascular lab is ICAVL accredited and equipped for diagnostic vascular studies.
Colon & Rectal Surgery
Lawrence G. Mendelow, M.D., F.A.C.S, Eric D. Lederman, M.D., F.A.C.S, and Alyssa Wait, M.D., F.A.C.S. offer minimally invasive approaches to colorectal disease including laparoscopic colectomy as well as less painful treatment for hemorrhoidal and anorectal problems. They perform diagnostic/therapeutic colonoscopy.
Hepatobiliary Surgery
Todd K. Howard, M.D., F.A.C.S -nationally recognized for pancreatic, hepatic, and biliary surgery. He is the only independent surgeon in St. Louis that provides a high volume source for pancreatic, hepatic, and biliary procedures. Craig R Smith, M.D., F.A.C.S. has 15 years of minimally invasive surgery experience including robotic surgery. He has been Dr. Todd Howard HPB partner since 2014.
